Calcium hydroxide, also known as limewater, is an essential ingredient in the indigo vat dyeing process. It is used to raise the pH level of the vat, which helps to activate the indigo and create a stable environment for the dye to bond with the fibers. When added to the indigo vat, calcium hydroxide reacts with the indigo to form a water-insoluble complex that can be easily absorbed by the fibers. It is usually added in small amounts, usually around 2-5% of the total weight of the indigo, and it should be mixed well before adding the indigo. Calcium hydroxide can also be used to help adjust the pH level of the vat during the dyeing process to achieve the desired shade of blue. It is important to note that the amount of calcium hydroxide used can affect the final color and it's recommended to use a pH meter to monitor the pH level of the vat.
